About Us

Who We Are

Our work focuses on eliminating deprivation among children and the youth.

The Opoku Gakpo Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to poverty eradication. Our work focuses on eliminating deprivation among children and the youth. We promote the well-being of children in various facets of society with the objective of ensuring they live life to the fullest.

Inspiration

Award winning journalist Joseph Opoku Gakpo nurtured the idea of establishing the foundation when he was 19 years after he had an extra-ordinary opportunity to volunteer for the Cadbury Cocoa Ambassadorial Programme and World Vision International Ghana as a cocoa ambassador. The assignment gave him the opportunity to work in deprived, rural communities in the Western region, helping establish reading and cocoa clubs in schools and working with locals to improve upon the education of their children. Through this experience, he saw at first hand extremely high levels of poverty, daily struggles of young ones to survive till the next day, and deprivation at unprecedented levels.

Moved to Act

Joseph told himself he will spend the rest of his life dedicated to helping make the lives of rural children better; an inspiration that has driven his passion for developmental journalism and philanthropy throughout the years. 9 years after that first life exposure to tough way of living in rural Ghana, MTN Ghana awarded Joseph as a Hero of Change over how his stories had brought development to communities in Volta Region and gave him 10,000 cedis to invest in a philanthropic course of his choice. Joseph matched the funds from MTN with 40,000 cedis of his personal resources and used that as seed funding to establish the Opoku Gakpo Foundation to champion the objective of eradicating poverty among children and youth.
